Libby's® Thanks Fans with Fourth Annual "Cansgiving" Sweepstakes

Iconic fruits and vegetables company to award prizes to fund Thanksgiving feasts for consumers and charity partners

Marion, N.Y. (November 1, 2016) – Libby’s®, the nation’s second largest brand of canned vegetables, launched today its fourth annual “Cansgiving” sweepstakes, which encourages fans to submit photos illustrating what they are thankful for this holiday season. Whether it is favorite family traditions, secret recipes or quality time spent with loved ones, the iconic fruit and vegetable company invites all to share the images that inspire their gratitude this holiday. All month long, Libby’s will also share Thanksgiving-themed recipes and tips for entertaining on its website (www.getbacktothetable.com) and social media platforms.

Fans can enter the Cansgiving sweepstakes via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram by posting a photo of what they are most thankful for, and including the hashtags #Cansgiving and #contest. Libby’s will award ten participants, chosen at random, with an electronic gift card of $350 and an assortment of Libby’s fruit and vegetable products to help each family’s Thanksgiving feast. Then, in the spirit of paying it forward, each winner will be able select one of three charities who will receive a matching monetary and product donation made on behalf of Libby’s, for a total of $3,500 in donations. The three charities include:

            –   Meals on Wheels America, the oldest and largest national organization supporting the more than 5,000 community-based senior nutrition programs across the country that are dedicated to addressing senior hunger and isolation. This network exists in virtually every community in America and, along with more than two million volunteers, delivers the nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks that enable America’s seniors to live nourished lives with independence and dignity.

            –    City Harvest pioneered food rescue in 1982 and, this year, will collect 55 million pounds of excess food to help feed the nearly 1.4 million New Yorkers struggling to put meals on their tables. Through relationships with farms, grocers, restaurants, and manufacturers, City Harvest collects nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste and delivers it free of charge to 500 soup kitchens, food pantries and other community food programs across the five boroughs.  In addition to helping meet the immediate need for food, City Harvest developed long-term Healthy Neighborhoods programs which partner with low-income communities to increase access to fresh produce and help residents shop for and cook nutritious, budget-conscious meals.

            –    Children’s Hunger Alliance, founded in 1970 in Columbus, is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger in Ohio. The organization’s mission is to ensure children without access receive healthy food, nutrition education and physical activity. In 2015 the organization worked with partners including childcare providers and afterschool programs to help provide more than 5.2 million nutrition meals and snacks to hungry children throughout Ohio’s 88 counties.

The sweepstakes opens at noon EST on Nov. 1, 2016, and ends at 11:59 p.m. EST on Nov.15, 2016. Official rules are available at http://www.getbacktothetable.com/cansgiving.

“Holidays are when some of life’s most cherished moments are made with family and friends,” said Bruce Wolcott, Vice President of Marketing for Seneca Foods. “We are thankful for our Libby’s family of customers, who bring us to their kitchens and dinner tables, and we hope our annual sweepstakes enhances memorable Thanksgiving experiences with loved ones. We are also grateful for the opportunity to pay it forward by matching each prize with a donation to organizations that are doing incredible work to help fight hunger in America.”

In conjunction with the sweepstakes, Libby’s will host a Cansgiving Twitter party to celebrate family, food and giving thanks at 12 p.m. EST on Friday, Nov. 4, 2016. Iron Chef Judge Donatella Arpaia and Amy Lupold-Bair of popular blog Resourceful Mommy will host the party and award four randomly selected participants with Thanksgiving-themed cooking prizes. Twitter users can follow along using the hashtag, #Cansgiving.

Unlock the Secret to a Happy, Healthy Gut

By Dylan Bailey, MS Candidate

A Happy, Healthy Gut

Here at Libby’s, we understand the importance of enjoying family meals together, and a crucial component of that is having a happy and healthy gut. After all, can you truly enjoy a delicious meal with loved ones if your GI system is out of whack? We think not. Although this issue is now being researched and discussed more openly, most of us still remain in the dark about how we can improve it. That changes today! Read on to learn the key to unlocking a healthy gut.

Let’s start with the basics. Your gut flora – scientifically speaking – is the complex and diverse community of microorganisms that live in your digestive tract. The tract is home to some 39 trillion bacteria, which is more than the number of cells that make up the human body! These invisible heroes are vital to a happy, healthy gut, and can have huge impacts on your overall health.

So, who are these heroes? There are three types of functional substances you should know about:

Sauerkraut, cucumber pickles and yogurt

Prebiotics

  • Prebiotics are foods with “non-digestible” components that help strengthen and grow your gut flora. Essentially, they’re food for your gut. Examples of prebiotics include vegetables—like corn or peas—as well as whole wheat, grains and fruits, like apples or bananas.

Probiotics

  • Probiotics, on the other hand, are the live bacteria that can be ingested as part of whole foods (like in yogurt or sauerkraut) or even in supplements. They play a major role in helping us enjoy all the scrumptious meals we eat by fighting off diseases and assisting in digestion.

Synbiotics

  • What do you get when you combine prebiotics and probiotics? The answer is simple: synbiotics! These bacteria combine both pre- and probiotics and stimulate the healthy bacteria in your large intestine.

When you think of October, you likely picture pumpkins, candy corn and scarecrows, but do you ever dream of a plate full of colorful, nutritious veggies? If not, this is your time to start. Why?! October is Vegetarian Awareness Month! Studies have shown that following a vegetarian diet can reduce your risk of serious health conditions (think: heart disease, type two diabetes and high blood pressure). Vegetarian diets are also linked to an increased intake of vitamin C, vitamin E and fiber. Reap these various health benefits by trying a new vegetarian meal at least three times a week throughout the upcoming month. Here are some nutrient-filled recipes to get you started!

Veggie-fy Old Classics

Many classic, meat-centric dishes can be easily—and tastily—updated to omit meat. Case in point: this Vegetarian Lasagna. Libby’s® Mixed Vegetables stand in for ground beef, a flavorful trade that will set you on the right track for achieving your daily serving of vegetables. Serve alongside a warm loaf of your favorite whole grain bread for a filling, family-friendly dinner.

Bring the Family Together for National Family Meals Month™

It’s time to gather around the table! Here at Libby’s, we believe in the power of family meals and know that the most memorable moments are those created around the dinner table when the whole clan can enjoy a wholesome, nutritious spread together. This is an important habit year-round, but especially during September. Why? It’s National Family Meals Month™! Libby’s is proud to celebrate this movement and encourages your family to get involved by Raising Your Mitt to Commit™ to one more meal together per week. To help make that happen, we’re highlighting simple, healthy meal solutions.

But first, a bit of science to back us up. Numerous studies underscore the long-term health, academic and societal benefits of consistently eating together as a family, and recent research shows that home-cooked meals nourish the spirit, brain and health of all family members. What’s more, regular family meals are linked to the kinds of outcomes that we all want for our children: higher grades (hello straight A’s!) and self-esteem as well as healthier eating habits and less risky behavior.

The bad news? According to a 2013 Harris poll, only 30 percent of American families share dinner every night. Juggling jobs, kids and the demands of a busy, modern life often comes at the expense of quality family meals, but this doesn’t need to be the case. The Libby’s Digital Recipe Box has hundreds of delicious, easy and wholesome meal ideas that will get your family back to the table in no time. Here’s one menu idea that you can try out this week.

Kick off your family meal with this Easy Three Bean Salad. Pair it with chips for a perfect scoop-able appetizer, or serve alongside your main course for a fiber-filled side dish. Want an entrée that’s not only easy, but fun for the whole family to make and eat together? These Easy Chicken Lettuce Wraps are a great way to have an Asian-inspired night! Finally, who could forget dessert? Entice the kids to finish their dinners by serving up our Easy Peach Crisp.

As the new school year starts, we challenge you to renew your commitment to designated family meals that will nourish your kids—and the entire family. Pledge to Raise Your Mitt to Commit™ to sharing one more family meal at home per week. Follow us on Facebook @LibbysTable and Twitter @LibbysTable for family meal inspiration, including shopping tips and recipes.
